My daughters love books. This is awesome, and I love reading to them as much as possible. There are a LOT of really great children’s books out their to read them, which is nice to mix things up.

However, among the things that Disney makes in a never ending effort to extract more money from the parents’ wallets give kids what they want, are books made of successful movies. Basically they distill an entire freaking movie down into 10 pages and less than 100 words. About the third or forth time in a row you’ve read through these, you want to find a nice sharp pencil with which to stab out your eyes. My 3-year old also has a Cars book, which is about 20 pages and 200 words. It sounds less awful, but it just prolongs the pain.

Frozen is a good movie. Cars is a great movie. Do yourself a favor, don’t buy these crap books for your kids. Your sanity will thank you.

What about going down to the local library and talking to the children’s librarian about good chapter books you can get for your daughters? I mean, three years old is still young, and I know that at that age, kids love to hear the same familiar stories over and over again, but maybe your librarian could help you find a few titles of books that are still relatively easy to understand, but that would need to be digested in chunks. That way, instead of reading the same 150 words about Elsa every night, you could read one chapter a night until you’re done. You get the much needed reprieve from repetition, and your daughters would start learning about more complex stories and would look forward to seeing “what happens next.”

Noted, thanks!

Our kids bookshelves are bigger than their toyboxes - I try to keep it that way. Books before bed is a thing in our house, currently the favourites are Winnie-the-pooh classics and Where the wild things are..

Both kids have figured out longer books = later bedtime so the short picture books are not first choice.

This is absolutely true. I can’t freaking stand this stuff, but my 3 year old just wants them read over and over. We didn’t get them for her, and I try to hide them.

Certainly there are more efficient eye gouging tools laying around your shop.

This usually bores and puts people to sleep in less than 5 minutes when read.

i find it extremely difficult and frustrating to get my kids to sit in 1 place for even the shortest of books.

Oh we have lots and lots of great books at home. But if she asks me nicely to read Elsa, I’m reading Elsa. I’m suggesting to others to avoid letting these kinds of books into their house :)

You really only ever need one book, and this is it. My kids, who are now 10, 10 and 13, still love it.

Yes! That was my favorite as a kid 30+ years ago. She has this one, and in the past hasn’t really been into it. I should bust it out again and give it another go!

Do you guys look for Goldbug hidden on each page? What turns me on about those books, such as What Do People Do All Day? is how just how accurate his cartoon drawings are, like the part where they are making a road or building a house. There are newer editions out now that are abridged and nowhere near as good as the originals. And there are some new stories with terrible copies of his artwork with rotten stories. The originals are best.

I remember throwing out my copy when I was in middle school. We didn’t have anywhere to store old stuff, and I needed the space, so I tossed all my old books. The only one I actually remember though is this book, and my copy was thoroughly trashed. I’m just glad that reprints are available.

I wish I kept all my hotwheels and legos for my kids. I spent so much time playing with those toys, I’m sure my kids would too. Those are easy enough to find, but english books here in rural quebec now that’s near impossible.

Yeah, I could see that. I did at least keep all my legos and a good chunk of my Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. I gave my kids a bunch of the cars (although not all of them). I’ve yet to turn them loose on the legos though.

Have it. Love it! I read it to them when they were too young to understand it.

Fortunately we didn’t have this problem with either of our girls. They both love to sleep, especially the baby. That kid needs her 12 every night.
